Martin Seymour-Smith's outstanding achievement lies in the field of literary biography and criticism. In 1963 he produced his comprehensive edition, in the old spelling, of Shakespeare's Sonnets (here revised and corrected by him and Peter Davies in 1998). With its landmark introduction, it was praised by William Empson and John Dover Wilson.
